Montréal, September 22, 2021 – The webseries Entre Parenthèses by Alexia Roc, a young Québec filmmaker of Haitian origin, comes to television as part of MAtv’s fall line-up. In each of the 13 episodes, two people who know each other sit down for an open-hearted conversation about a wide range of subjects. The show will air on Wednesdays at 9:00 and Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. It premieres tonight at 9. Watch the trailer.
Promoting dialogue is one of the ways Videotron’s community channel encourages mutual awareness and understanding. “MAtv is pleased to broadcast this show about the diversity and complexity of human relationships,” says Steve Desgagné, Senior Director of MAtv. “The takeaway is that listening and keeping an open mind are the keys to overcoming taboos and hardships.”
Similar but different
On Entre Parenthèses, fascinating individuals open up about their innermost feelings as they tell their unique stories and answer questions on a wide range of topics. The result is a series of deeply personal and positive conversations. This is a show about honesty, acceptance and openness.
The series’ developer and director Alexia Roc deals sensitively with sometimes-difficult issues as she investigates the ways humans interact: “The idea behind sitting two people who know each other down for a recorded chat was to open up a dialogue, break down taboos and learn something new,” she says. “I hope it will help us understand each other better.”
The gamble pays off for Roc, a 25-year-old filmmaker who has written and directed more than a dozen films about family, mental health and honesty. In these encounters between unique individuals, she is able to throw their differences and similarities into sharp relief.
Deeply human encounters
Interpersonal relationships of different kinds are at the heart of Entre Parenthèses. In the course of the 13 episodes, viewers will meet couples, friends and relatives.
For example, big sister Opal and kid brother Loïc-Noah talk to each other lovingly and respectfully about subjects such as illness and coming out. Brothers Gabriel and Alexandre remember their childhood and discuss queer beauty. Nadine and son Charles, and Tracey and son Samuel, delve into mother-son relationships with humour and tact despite the painful parts, such as coping with illness.
We meet couples young and old who have been through hard times together, such as Gérard and Marie-Jeanne, who immigrated to Québec and love each other unconditionally after 58 years of marriage! Samuelle and Gaëlle, and Frédérique and Léa, tell stories of friendships that have stood the test of time, despite differences, wounds and fears.
Viewers will be charmed and moved by these special and enriching human journeys. Watch Entre Parenthèses on MAtv Wednesdays at 9 p.m. and Thursdays at 6 p.m. Also available on demand on illico and Helix, and for catch-up viewing on matv.ca.
