Quebecor and Videotron invest nearly $300 million to move forward with Canadian expansion

Following through on their commitment to offer Canadian consumers more choice by building out one of the country’s most powerful and reliable wireless networks, Quebecor and Videotron have announced a $299 million investment to acquire 305 blocks of spectrum in the 3800 MHz band. This major addition to Quebecor’s spectrum portfolio, made at the conclusion of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada’s latest auction, brings its total investment in the 3500 and 3800 MHz bands, both essential for 5G technology, to over $1.1 billion.

Videotron serves lockout notice to Laurentien-area Local SEVL 2815 (Gatineau)

After 18 bargaining sessions with representatives of Laurentien-area Local SEVL 2815 (Gatineau) on renewal of the collective agreement that expired on August 31, 2021, and several high level meetings between Videotron management and representatives of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Videotron's legitimate requests, which are necessary in order to deal with major changes in the industry and recruitment challenges, have been rejected. To break the deadlock, the company made a comprehensive offer on October 10, which the union decided not to recommend to its members and which was subsequently rejected by the membership.

Videotron wins copyright infringement case against three tech firms and a shareholder

The Federal Court has ruled in favour of Videotron in a dispute over the illegal retransmission of the TVA and TVA Sports channels by Konek Technologies Inc., Coopérative de câblodistribution Hill Valley and Libéo inc. In a decision handed down on May 26, the Court ordered the three companies, as well as Jean-François Rousseau, a shareholder in two of the companies, to pay $553,000 in joint and several damages for copyright infringement. The Court also issued a permanent injunction requiring the defendants to immediately cease carrying TVA Sports.

Videotron is pleased with last Friday’s Federal Court decision in its dispute with U.S.-based Xperi (formerly known under the names Rovi and TiVo) over the alleged use of patented technology in Videotron’s illico viewing platform. Those patents have now been declared invalid.
